Rumbustification Day.

On Friday we had Rumbustification Day, I thought it was only the year 8's doing the Volleyball but it turns out that it was also juniors so once me, Rhycos, Kyzel and Bronson finished Nogo said we had to let the other kids play for a while. So me, Rhycos, Bronson and Kyzel played a game of badminton. It was fun then Robbie and Rylin came back from surfing and we played some Volleyball. We had to play with the little kids even though they didn't know how to play. After Volleyball we played some badminton. We then went to table tennis, me and Rhycos beat Mr Redmond and Kyzel and we felt really happy that we had beaten the best people.

Formal

Formal.
When we got to formal we didn't really know what to do, so we basically just talked until dinner. For dinner I had chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket and potato salad, the potato salad was cold but I really enjoyed the chicken and pulled pork. Then we had dessert, for dessert we had either carrot cake or blueberry in cake with ice cream. After dinner me, Rylin, Sid, Robbie, Bronson and Kyzel played try to keep the balloon off the ground but we did it in a order so Rylin first, Sid, Robbie, me, Kyzel and Bronson last, then if Kyzel got out first then he would go last. We did that for at least an hour and a half.

Belonging

For belonging we had to make a piece of art representing what group we think we I belong to being a goalkeeper in Hockey, because Hockey is my favourite sport and I like hanging out with Robbie and Rylin and playing Hockey. I want to be a goalkeeper for hockey because Robbie and Rylin say I am good and I enjoy stopping the ball.

This is the link

Soap carving

For Te Ao today we are doing soap carving, I chose a Koru because I feel like I need new beginnings in highschool. Koru means new beginnings, growth and re-generation.

MATH - Using the compass

For math we used the compass to make these three shapes. It was hard to start off with because the compass kept moving while I was drawing. It was extremely rewarding when it was done because it looked nice.

Maths Tuesday using ratio's

For math on Tuesday we did the ratios of the cars, SUV's, Trucks and Other.

There was 25 cars, 12 SUV's, 2 trucks 1 other

25:12:2:1

In total there was 40 altogether. The ratio was then put into a fraction over the total.

 25/40, 12/40, 2/40, 1/40

The fractions simplified 5/8 3/10 1/20 1/40

Maths using ratio Wednesday

For math we had to figure out the ratios for the colors of the cars in the Rawhiti school car park, white, red, blue, black and other.

I found,  7 Blues : 7 reds : 12 whites : 3 blacks: 15 others.

The ratio was 12:7:7:3:15.

Belonging

This year for belonging I helped the year 7's feel like they belong in this classroom, I felt like I belong in this classroom when my friends include my in volleyball. Migrants sometimes don't feel like they belong because of other people. My teamwork skills are much better since I've played volleyball.

Resilience

I did the belaying for high ropes, even though I didn't know how. I got rope burn but it was really fun, I did the belaying because I am terrified of heights.

Empathy

When Thomas and Angus raided our cabin while they trapped us in their room. I showed empathy to Patty and Robbie by agreeing with them because their beds got wrecked.

Success

I swam in the freezing cold water in raft building even though it was cold as. I succeeded because I decided to swim even thought I thought I wouldn't.

Belonging

Belonging to a group helped me find Bob in search and rescue because we had good communications and good searching skills.

Science

Science Research

Problem:

We have been researching how to transport people on Mars to different locations and how we would survive on Mars.  We think that on Mars we need to adapt our vehicles to cope with different gravity, difficulty obtaining fuel, and no roads.

We need to have a heavier car so that we can stay on mars but a light enough car so it's not too slow. We could make an electric car with power stations around. We will need new wheels suitable for mars so heavy terrain.

This is what we have done so far...

Where I got my  research from

Information

Example:

Nasa - what makes a planet habitable

Example:

Needs - water,

Definition “...can sustain life for a significant period of time…”

Fortnite officially cooperates with Ferrari. The new car is in the game tomorrow - MixRod.com

This is our rocket ship to go to mars. To travel to space we need to have a hard shell so it can handle the atmospheric pull. The mars rover needs all these components below to work and why it is on mars. Curiosity's wheels have a 20-inch (50.8 cm) diameter. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed the rover to roll over obstacles up to 25 inches (65 centimetres) high and to travel about 660 feet (200 m) per day on land. Our Ferrari will go 1000 kph's on land. We will take a jet engine and will be bolted in with titanium bolts. To get these items we will need 19.7 billion NZ dollars. We will also need 20 million gallons of water, 1 million kgs of soil, 1 trillion tree seeds, 1000 auto seed growing machines (Needs to be made), 1000 monkeys so we can see if we can breathe. 1000 solar panels Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. We will need wheels that can withstand rocky surfaces and big hills.

Creating Oxygen

Comprehension strategy 1 – INFERRING

Why do you think scientists are spending time and money conducting experiments to create oxygen?

To move planet

Comprehension strategy 2 – VISUALIZATION

Draw a picture of a comet in space.

Comprehension strategy 3 – SUMMARIZING

Summarize this article in 30 words. Scientists have learnt how to make oxygen so we can move over to mars, they know how to know they just need to make it.

Comprehension strategy 4 – MAKING CONNECTIONS

How does this article relate to what you already know about what we need to live on another planet? We need to have oxygen on a different planet to live.

Comprehension strategy 5 – REREADING FOR INFORMATION

What are scientists trying to create? Oxygen

What space bodies were scientists studying when they came up with this idea? Comets

What causes the ‘tail’ of a comet that we can see in the sky? ice

H2O is the chemical formula for water, what is the chemical formula for Carbon dioxide? C02 For an oxygen molecule? O

Where do comets mostly come from? Oort cloud

Comprehension strategy 6 - DEVELOPING VOCABULARY

Give the definition for the following words

Potentially - with the capacity to develop or happen in the future.

Originate - create or initiate

Molecular - relating to or consisting of molecules.

Oxygen - a colourless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.

Kinetic - relating to or resulting from motion.

Energy - power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines.

Oxidise - combine chemically with oxygen.

Velocity - the speed of something in a given direction.

Camp Persuasion

Do you think that everyone should go to camp?

Personally I believe that not everyone should be forced to go to camp but if they choose to they can.

The reason that I think this is because they might have claustrophobia and the cabins might be enclosed spaces for them. They also might have a fear of water or a fear of water and there would be activities they couldn’t do because of their abilities/fears.

People might have dietary requirements, they also might think that camp is boring that is fine not all people are outdoorsy.

If you had claustrophobia would you like to be enclosed in a tiny cabin? Do you think they would feel safe if they were trapped and they were forced to go?

Does that change your thoughts that not everyone has to go to camp?

Science

What question did you ask?
How a Ferrari with a jet engine, lots of food, lots of water and lots of fuel can travel on mars.
What science we needed to know?
We needed to know engineering, design and planet surface.

My Alien Pet

This is OLON the Alien, OLON stands for Overprotective

Lost

Old

Nesfek

I cannot pronounce his actual name.
Their species is the Nesfek. They are the most dangerous tribe of Aliens and I Befriended one. Nesfek’s are known to kill their prey by impaling their heads on sharpened sticks and eating their flesh. OLON has just told me that he is their leader and his people will launch an attack on our planet for “capturing” their leader.

I found him huddled outside our house in the rain, I took him inside and hid him from my family. I named him OLON because he is very old and protective of me. That day he told me he could have killed me but he saw into the future through my eyes. Now we are good friends but what will happen once he launches an attack on earth…

Today is Monday so I have to go to school and leave OLON, he says bye and I leave… I am back from school and he has set up a satellite on my house roof!...

Animal Thief MPR

  1. The Animal Thief

By Zoe

Splat! Lily looked up to see something small and blue slide limply down the frosty window and off  the windowsill with a loud thump. In a flash of  orange Lily’s kitten Maizy  sped over to the little blue bird. Quickly Lily dove at her cat and scooped  Maizy up holding her close, “That poor bird’s not for you”. Lily  carefully put Maizy down and ran through the snow to the small bird. holding it delicately in her hands, she rolled it over onto it’s back.Image result for budgie

One of its blue wings was bent on a weird angle and it had a small cut under one of its small black eyes. It tried to move its head but the effort made it lay back down, closing its eyes. “Mum!” Lily called “Muuum! Come have a look at this!”Mum walked over, frowning.

“No yelling please Lily, what’s wrong?”

“There’s an injured budgie over here, I saw it Crash into our window!”

Lily lay the bird down and found an empty shoebox in the garage and lined it with newspaper and then a soft, fluffy blanket. She carried it over to the budgie and carefully laid him on it. Mum came over and peered into the box tipping her head to one side “I think he needs to go to the vet” she said, “Fast.”

Lily quickly lifted up the shoebox and carried it over to the door while Mum got the keys and hurried after her. After a short drive they reached the vet, the same one they took Maizy to and they walked into the waiting room. Lily breathed in the lovely smell of the animals and looked around at the familiar room. She came here quite often because she volunteered here after school some days. Lily walked up to the counter and told Mary the receptionist what had happened. She gently passed over the box “You may leave but I’ll call if we find anything.” Mary carried the budgie and it’s box into a small room at the end of the hallway and shouldered open a heavy white door which swung closed behind her.

Lily and Mum slowly walked out to the car, Mum grasped my hand and squeezed it, “He’ll be alright.” When they got home Lily walked slowly up the stairs and into her bedroom and dropped onto her bed. “I wonder why that bird was loose?” she thought. “ You wouldn’t just let a bird like that loose. Maybe it just escaped.” Lily decided to make up some lost posters for the budgie and she walked around the small town hanging them on lampposts and in shop windows.

When hanging the last poster up in the library she saw a lot of other posters and fliers and most of them were animals gone missing and there was also a wanted poster for an animal thief. “Now I’m getting somewhere,” thought Lily, pulling the poster off the window, tucking it into her pocket, and running home.

She only stopped when she reached her bedroom and sat down at her messy desk. After pushing her other stuff onto the floor she laid out the poster. He must have had the Budgie. Just then the phone rang, it was probably the vet! Lily ran downstairs and over to the phone but her mum had got there first. Lily cuddled Maisy nervously trying to listen to the conversation. Mum walked into another room and closed the door, I slowly walked up to my bedroom.

I grab my Ipad and googled animal thief, immediately it comes up with photos of the same person on the poster. I looked deeper into the web and found out he has been known to hang around this neighbourhood. That was probably why there were so many other lost animal posters around.

Lily picks up Maizy who had been pawing anxiously at her chair and places her on her lap. Just then her Dad stuck his head around the side of the door “Dad!” cried Lily “Do you have the newspaper?”

“Yes, why?” said Dad, surprised.

“Can you go get it?” pleaded Lily.

“Ok” said Dad, confused.

When Dad returned with the newspaper Lily ripped it open and turned to the crime section. Right in the middle of the page was an article about an animal thief! Lily read on and found out that last night he had been seen on cameras at the local pet shop with a sack. Not bothering to grab a coat Lily put on her shoes and ran out the door. Soon she was at the pet shop.  She stepped into the shop and gasped,  the cages were all hanging open and papers were scattered all over the floor with the frantic shop owner in the middle of it on her knees.

“Did the animal thief do this?” stuttered Lily.

“Yes he came and destroyed everything and took all the animals!” cried the shopkeeper desperately.

“Hmm,” said Lily, wandering around the shop. “Why didn’t I think of that!” yelled Lily excitedly “There will be footprints in the snow!”

She ran outside and scanned round “Great, big, large footprints!” thought Lily and she sprinted down the road. After 10 minutes she slowed down to a walk. After an hour she started to feel quite hungry and tired. She had Walked to the edge of the city and the footprints were turning into an alleyway and they stopped at the door of an old apartment.

Walking around to the other side of the house she peeped through a frosty window. There they were, cages and cages of animals all with photos and names on them! She pulled on the edge of the window and it gradually opened. Lily clambered through and dropped cautiously into the damp room she tiptoed over to the nearest cage. Brushing away some cobwebs she pulled on the catch, it was locked. Suddenly she heard footsteps! Lily ran and dived out the window pushing it closed behind her. Crouching down she grabbed her phone and informed her parents and the police what had happened.

Soon some police cars came whizzing down the alleyway and Lily waved gratefully at them, glad she was not alone. A few minutes later her Mum arrived looking extremely worried and pale. Lily ran into Mum’s arms and squeezed her tight. “Good news!” said Mum “ the budgie is all right!” Mum drove Lily home but on the way they picked up the budgie. The budgie was still in the shoebox but he had a bandage around his wing. Then they got a call from the police saying that the thief was in jail.

“Where will all the animals go?” asked Lily, anxiously. “Well,” said Mum, smiling “All the animals went back to where they came from. All except for one… the budgie! Do you want to keep him?”

The Karoro MPR

 The Karoro MPR

The Karoro is a native bird. It is both a scavenger and a predator. It is an omnivore. That is, it will eat both plants and animals.

Black-billed gulls are found all over New Zealand, but they are the most common in the South Island. They usually stay close to the coast.

Most of the Black-backed gull’s feathers are white. The back is black. The bill  is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill.  The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.  First year birds are brown and in the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown.

Both predators and scavengers,  Black-Backed gulls threaten rare birds such as the New Zealand dotterel, little blue penguin, and some terms and petrels by predating on eggs and chicks, and can also attack newborn lambs. They also feed on washed up fish and shellfish, and aren’t fussy if it’s been dead a few days and is getting a bit smelly. They are often seen in fields taking worms and grubs and scavenging in rubbish dumps. There are sometimes massive flocks of them hanging around the Bottle Lake landfill. They frequently rob other seabirds of their catch, and they can swallow a small wild duck whole.

2. Karoro, New Zealand, now, they tell us what they eat, where they live and that it eats both plants and animals.

3. A documentary, because they tell us all the stuff we need to know about the animals and facts as well, it’s  different because it is not on a show.

4. They are most common in the south island on the coast, they have a black back and a yellow and red beak, when they are young they have brown body's.

5. Swamp - bog

Grasp - clasp

Abdomen - Stomach

Galaxiid - bird

Dappled - Speckled

6. What plants do they eat?

Why do they live more in the south island?

Dog Smartness Test.

We did a test to see how smart our dogs were and the test was if they put their feet out to stop themselves smooshing against the wall then they would be smart but if they didn't then well they weren't. You could try it yourself with your own dog. Arlo failed but Pixel did it.

Bridge Story.

In 1824 a builder and his crew were assigned to make a bridge. When building the bridge they never got specific instructions on what to do, how far to go and what materials they needed to build the bridge. Joe Reeky, the project manager, decided that he and his crew would build how they thought a bridge would be built; from one side to the other. They thought that straw or wood would be a horrible idea because if a flood happened it would collapse. They thought all day and all night for an idea on what to build the bridge out of but nothing ever happened. One day one of his new employees, Joseph Aspdin thought maybe if you put cement and water together that would be a strong substance to withstand the heavy currents of the river. Once it was done the anonymous buyer was very pleased with what they had done, he said it was just as he planned, a concrete bridge. The workers were very dumbstruck because they did not expect they would know considering that it had never been made before and they still hadn’t named the substance. I would probably not walk the bridge because it would have been made almost 200 years ago.

Covid - level four lockdown

On Tuesday the 17th 2021 New Zealand went into a level four snap lockdown for three days, I was quite surprised because it was only one case and the case was in Auckland not the south island. But when I found it was the Delta variant of Covid 19 (the Delta variant is a more contagious version of the normal Covid 19.) I instantly knew why it was so immediate.

Day One Of Three Day Lockdown. 18.8.21

I woke up knowing there was no school today or for the rest of the week so I was instantly in a good mood. I had already known that I had nearly finished all my work from school so there wouldn't be much catching up, first I finished my math, then I finished my literacy (although still waiting for Thomas to do his half of the science task for literacy), then I did science which was doing an interview with Jeff Bezos(not actually him) (he went to space and were doing space for science.)

Once I'd done that I TRIED to curl my hair, if you notice the big TRIED you will be able to tell that it didn't go to plan. Then we took the dogs (Pixel and Arlo) out for a walk which was fun. When we got back me and my sisters played some Minecraft and we made a massive rollercoaster which went to each others houses that was also fun. There was a notice from the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern saying that there'd been 4 new cases and they might all be linked to the New South Wales outbreak.

There was another 3 new cases in the community luckily they were still confined to Auckland. My mum said that since it was lockdown we'd get more device time so YAY, once we played Minecraft we had dinner which was Spanish Omelette which was DELISH (kind of like a quiche). after that we played Minecraft again which was, you guessed it, still fun. Then we went and watched Stranger Things, then we went to sleep.

Day 2 Of Three Day Lockdown. 19.8.21

I woke up still happy because there still no school which is unusual for me. When I got through to the living room my mum told me she didn't know if there were any new cases or not but that that we'd find out at the one o'clock briefing, then I went to my room and played Fortnite with my stepdad, Steve. Now I am writing this blogpost the time is 10:55am.

Where Do I Belong.

Math A1, Math Smart, Math Badges.

For my calculations I had to use google maps to measure the distance between my houses to school, every second school day I'm at my dads so every school week (5 days) I'm at my dads and he lives 12.4kms away(12400 meters) my mum lives 119mm away and I'm at my mums every 1st, 3rd and 5th day, so three times a week. In one day I travel 119mm and in a school week I travel 24800.357m, there are 41 school weeks in one school year so I multiplied 24800.357m by 41 and that ended up being 1,016,814.637m. At my primary school you can be here for 8 years so I multiplied 1,016,814.637m by 8 the total was 8,131,517.096m in the time I will have been at school for.

The skills I used was long multiplication and how to properly measure distance, since it has three decimal places shows how exact it has to be.
